She goes through the motions
of her every day life
She keeps that smile upon her face
bright and beautiful
She's learned the hard way
the coldness of the world
and she knows how to hide
she has the pain
that is hard to understand
the pain that can only be seen
when you look deep into her eyes
and when it overwhelms her
the only thing she knows to do
is cry, cry a river
When he came into her life
eyes, deep, intense, amazing
arms, strong, comfortable, real
she realized love existed
not only in her dreams and fantasies
and it had a way of creeping
into your life at the most needed times
It holds you, caresses you
swallows you up completely
until breathing becomes unnecessary
for you are now living on love's wings
He tried all he could
to find himself in her
and when finally one day
he looked deeper into her eyes
he saw an intensity
that scared him to an end
He saw pain and bitterness
and the farther he looked
the more fear tore at his soul
He was so worried about the bad
he forgot to look at the love
the generous heart, unyielding faith
the desire to give her all to someone
and so he ran
and she cried, cried a river
She went back to her life
the process of healing
remembering his kiss
his way of making it all okay
and she couldn't let go
not everything, not it all
she was taught to fight to the death
never let go of your dreams
she couldn't give up on him
the way he did with her
and eventually he made a call
and they talked until all
hours of the night
And she forgave him
and he fell in love
all over again
Time passed and fear grew
in both their hearts
In her, the fear of abandonment
In him, the fear of loving her
so completely, he wanted to give himself up
He was not ready to give up
being the most important one in his life
and she was not ready
to hand back her unmended heart
And so they live in love
ignoring the pain and fear
that resides evermore
denying that they will never be
all they both need
Yet she loves him true
knowing the friendship will last
if nothing else
and he loves her deep
knowing they will always
be there for each other
And although they try to forget
the agony they've caused one another
every night they both cry
cry a river
How do you let go of someone
whom you love complete
when you know you'll never
be able to fulfill them
to make them so happy
nothing else in life matters
